Why Upaok exists
We've spent careers in engineering — at startups, at scale-ups, at large enterprises — and the same pattern shows up everywhere. Companies want to hire the best engineers, and the best engineers, increasingly, don't live in any one city. They live in Lisbon and Bengaluru and Lagos and São Paulo, and they're brilliant, and they're ready to build great software with people who'll work the way they work.
Upaok is the bridge. We curate a network of senior engineers around the world, we run the processes that make distributed work feel like co-located work, and we build software with our clients — not for them.
What we believe
- Geography is not a proxy for talent. The best engineer for your project may be 12 timezones away.
- Async is the default. Written specs, recorded demos, decision docs. Calls when they're necessary, not by default.
- Transparency wins. You see the repo, the project board, the demo every Friday — not curated weekly summaries.
- Code that lasts. We build for ten-year horizons, not for the next demo. Documented, tested, owned by your team after handoff.
How we got here
Upaok started in 2020 as a side project pairing a handful of engineers across three continents with founders looking for senior engineering capacity. Five years later, the network includes more than 200 vetted engineers in 30+ countries, and we've shipped more than 420 projects.
We're still small and intentional. Less than 4% of engineering applicants are accepted into the network. Every engagement has a tech lead who's done the work before. We turn down more projects than we take.
